STEMinNM Mini-grant: STEM with an “A”

Afterschool 21st Century participants in the STEM with an “A” to include the Arts project, offered by the Northwest NM Arts Council in Farmington NM, in partnership with STEMinNM as part of the 2025 mini-grants. This project aims to introduce STEAM careers and encourage participating students to pursue science careers through the Arts. This program launched at Boys & Girls Clubs 21st Century of San Juan County, where students participate in hands-on summer learning and afterschool to explore STEM careers, conduct scientific experiments, and participate in competitions and prepare for Science Fair. Through this program, students have access to local and regional science fairs and Science Olympiad competitions, which offer a platform to present original research and build confidence in scientific inquiry beyond the classroom.

As part of the goal to bridge education and career pathways, students have the opportunity to participate in a STEAM camp at the Dine Youth Community Center in Shiprock.  The STEAM project is part of the 21st Century Family night for the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Juan County.  Navajo Prep and Aztec High School interns assist the arts council in the presentations done from Huerfano to Sonostee to encourage students to use the arts in STEM and guide them in research and career exploration to deepen the connection between classroom learning and future STEM careers!
